Gold is a bet on the cost of holding money
The previous lesson established that real yields are gold's strongest driver. This one makes that practical: what to watch, what to expect, and where the relationship breaks.
The mechanism, precisely
An investor choosing between gold and a US Treasury faces a simple comparison:
- Treasury: pays the nominal yield, loses purchasing power at the inflation rate. Net = the real yield.
- Gold: pays nothing, holds purchasing power roughly over long horizons. Net ≈ zero real.
When real yields are positive, the Treasury wins and capital leaves gold. When real yields are negative, gold wins by default — a zero real return beats a negative one.
That is the entire relationship. It is not a correlation someone noticed; it is an arbitrage between two ways of storing value.
